What I'm Reading
A new atmospheric psychological suspense by Darby Kane
Such a Clever Girl by Darby Kane
What a twisty atmospheric suspense! Set in Sleepy Hollow, the village north of New York City known for the creepy legend of the Headless Horseman and a truly legendary month-long celebration of Halloween, it begins with the reading of a will. There are shadowy characters, hidden connections, a haunted house (or two!), and a perplexing tragedy that binds together three women, who would rather not have anything to do with one another.
When the scion of the wealthy (and plagued by tragedy) Tanner family dies, his estate is about to be divided according to his will. Fifteen years earlier, his son’s family (wife, son and daughter) disappeared without a trace. Each person called to the reading of the will had connections to the family the night they vanished, and each has their own secrets to keep. The surprise guest, however, is Aubrey Tanner, the granddaughter who vanished years earlier, amid speculation that she might have been responsible for the strange events.
Told from multiple points of view, Kane deftly weaves a complicated plot where it is difficult to know who to trust. I could not put this down. And it stayed with me long after I finished the book.
Thank you to William Morrow and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy.
